Career Strategies for Women in Academe: Arming Athena
Paula J. Caplan's book, Lifting a Ton of Feathers: A Woman's Guide to Surviving in the Academic World (Univ. of Toronto Press), includes a Checklist for a Woman-Positive University ("which I say is still, sadly, kind of a science-fiction chapter, since so few universities are truly woman-positive"). "That checklist was done for two reasons. One was to give university administrators or activists some ideas about things they could do to improve their institutions. The other, more nearly relevant to what you might be looking for, was to give prospective graduate students or employees a sense of some kinds of things they might look for." (quotes from Paula Caplan).

ANTIOCH UNIVERSITY.

"I graduated with an MA in Clinical Psychology in June from
Antioch Univ., Santa Barbara (they have 5 or 6 other locations), but I didn't
find them on your list. Antioch was founded by abolitionist Horace Mann in the
late 1800's, and has a very strong multi-cultural philosophy written into its
by-laws and curriculum. Feminism and multi-cultural issues are mandated as a
topic and format in every class."

"As with some other schools, the entire faculty isn't
necessarily feminist friendly, but we are a growing and supported force on the
campus. We also offer an emphasis area track in Women's/Feminist Psychology and
support practicum placements that specialize in working with women. In addition,
our Multicultural/Community Psychology emphasis area also fuels the feminist
friendly atmosphere of our school. Finally, our new chancellor is Natalie
Porter, Ph.D., a noted feminist psychologist." - from POWR-L

Four campuses
"The four campuses of CSPP offer
APA accredited programs which are clearly cross-cultural in their foci. Those
campuses have been in the forefront of th development nad implementatin of
cross-cultural psychology programs. The CSPP system has an institute called the
MERIT Institute (Multicultural Education, Research, Intervention, and Training)
which uses the best of its faculty in cross-cultural psychology across the four
campuses (e.g., Oliva Espin, Derald Wing Sue).

"The internship at the University of Akron Counseling, Testing

entire senior staff espouses feminist principles, although some may choose to
use words like womanist or humanist. I'd be glad to talk with anyone who'd like
